Types of Image
In this section, the term ‘This Is Reportage: Family’ or ‘us’ or ‘we’ refers to the owner of the website. The term ‘you’ refers to the photographer subscribing to our service.
As we are all about documentary family photography, any image(s) you upload must have been taken naturally, without any posing or guidance from you. By uploading images, you are specifically agreeing that:
- You did not pose the scene, or control the action in any way.
- You did not ask people to repeat something in order to obtain the image, or ask them to be still/motionless etc.
- You took the image. This means no images from second shooters are allowed, even within Stories. The exception to this is if you have joined as a duo/Studio – in this case, you are both ‘primary shooters’ anyway.
- It is a single-exposure (double exposures, whether in-camera, or post, are ineligible)
- There are no watermarks on your images.
Please note that images from weddings are not allowed. This is because we have our sister-site, This is Reportage, for documentary wedding photography; we don’t want repeats of images on this site that may already be over there (and which may have already been awarded, too).
There are hundreds of different family situations, which are all fine and eligible (births, family photoshoots, birthday parties, family reunions, ‘days in the life’ and much more) – it is only images from weddings which we specifically do not allow.
Images submitted to our contests can be taken from any time – they do not have to have been taken within the current year; they can be from any year.
Copyright, Consent and Image Usage
In this section, the term ‘This Is Reportage: Family’ or ‘us’ or ‘we’ refers to the owner of the website. The term ‘you’ refers to the photographer subscribing to our service.
- You must own the copyright – and be the sole owner of this copyright – to every image uploaded to the site, and by uploading, you are accepting you do so (with the exception of profile photos of yourself which may have been taken by others; in this case you must have permission to use them; by uploading, you are accepting that you have obtained the required permission).
- You must also have the right – as stated in your own photography contract with your clients – to upload/display your images on third-party websites such as This is Reportage: Family (including entering them into the awards).
- Copyright at all times remains with you; never with us.
- By uploading any image to the website, you agree that we can use your image(s) for promotional uses, on this website, our social media profiles, and third party websites. From time to time, this may include the use on our sister-site, This is Reportage, including its respective social media accounts. For first-party use, images will always be credited if possible, with links to either your This Is Reportage: Family profile, or your website, or both. For third-party use (such as other blogs/websites talking about This Is Reportage: Family), we will always insist on your images being credited, but, by agreeing to these terms, you accept this is outside of our total control, and so may not always be possible.
Transparent Award Judging Process
It’s vital that both types of our awards (Reportage Family Awards for single images, and Family Story Awards for a series of images of a single family) are as fair as possible; with no extraneous factors determining each winner, other than each image’s strength. It’s also just as important that you know exactly how the judging process works, so here’s all the details:
- Every single image and story entered into the contests will be assesed by the judges.
- Images are judged totally anonymously, so the judges don’t know who has taken each image.
- When the majority of our judges deem an image or story to be award-worthy, only then do they become Awards.
- There will always be at least 3 judges for each competition, though we aim for 5 judges.
- A judge can not see if another judge has voted for an image or not, so can’t be swayed that way.
- Each competition will have different judges, ensuring it is not always the same opinions/tastes giving awards.
- The owner of the site will never be a judge, except in exceptional circumstances (such as a judge becoming sick, or unable to do their judging for some reason, and there is no time left to seek another judge).
Image Manipulation
In this section, the term ‘This Is Reportage: Family’ or ‘us’ or ‘we’ refers to the owner of the website. The term ‘you’ refers to the photographer subscribing to our service.
You are, of course, free to edit your images as you see fit, with the following exceptions:
- Cloning out parts of the image is not allowed.
- Likewise, cloning in/adding in, or ‘moving’ parts of the image, is also not allowed.
- AI image-manipulation is not allowed.
For Reportage and/or Story Awards, we may ask to see RAWs as proof of this; we remain the right to remove awarded images if any of the above image manipulation rules have been broken.
