No poses, nothing staged:
This is Reportage: Family

Capturing the very essence of what makes your family, your family – That’s what we do here at This is Reportage: Family. Our photographers want to capture all those little moments, all those interactions, those smiles between parents as they watch their kids, the running and shouting as those kids are let loose in the playground, the day-to-day events of their lives as they get ready for school, or the once-in-a-lifetime events such as Grandma’s 90th birthday party. All those moments are your life story, and that’s exactly what we aim to capture.

So that’s why – for the vast majority of our photographers’ coverage – it’ll be totally natural: capturing each moment without intervening, without posing or setting anything up. That way, when you look back at your photos, you’ll remember what was actually happening, what you were feeling – rather than what you were being asked to do by the photographer. Of course, most of our members still love to take some portraits or posed group-shots of you – if you want them to, of course – but the vast majority of their coverage will be totally natural.

For Families

Use our directory to tell us where your family shoot or event will take place, and we’ll show you the best family photographers for you to choose from; browse through their portfolio, check out their Reportage Family Awards and Family Story Awards, visit their websites.

They all have their own distinct styles – that’s the beauty of photography, we’re all so different! – but what we can say is that, because they feature here, they capture most of your family shoot or event in an unobtrusive, reportage way, capturing those moments that are so important to you, without interference.

For Photographers

We know that documentary family photography is a complete skill, and a complete art; we want to not only celebrate that, and promote it as a whole, but we also want to specifically promote you: Sign up to This Is Reportage: Family and feature an unlimited number of images on your profile; showcase your greatest captures in our Reportage Family Awards; demonstrate your storytelling with our Family Story Awards.

As mentioned at the top of this page, you may still do some portraits or posed group shots – and that’s totally fine; This Is Reportage: Family is just about featuring the documentary aspect of your work, so as long as you cover the majority of the family shoot/event like that – and at a high standard –  we’d love to feature you here.

A little bit about me

This is Reportage: Family is the sister-site of This is Reportage, the widely-acclaimed and respected documentary wedding photography portal, and was founded and run by me, Alan Law (Rangefinder’s 30 Rising Star, Top 5 Wedding Photojournalists in the UK 2017 (MyMemory), 150 Best International Wedding Photographers 2016 (SLR Lounge), Best Reportage Wedding Photographer (SWWA / 2013, 2014, & 2015), Top 10 Creative Wedding Photographers in the UK (Autographer), Top 9 Wedding Photographers in the UK (Brides Magazine), 100 Best Wedding Photographers in the World 2016 (Purcell Studios), and a family photographer Cornwall).

I have always loved the documentary side of what we do; capturing moments naturally – yet creatively – is, to me, right up there as some of the most skilled and rewarding things we can do in this life. It’s a cliché, but moments really do matter most – and I love the fact that we’re capturing these moments – these memories for people – and at the same time we’re creating art. Because, although that may sound pretentious, I really think it’s true: Documentary photography – whether that’s of families, or weddings, or of anything else – is capturing art on the fly. Art that matters.

That’s why I founded This is Reportage back at the tail-end of 2017, and it’s again why This is Reportage: Family has been ‘born’ in mid-2020. A sister-site to TiR, I want to put as much time, energy and innovation into TiRF to promote the skill, artistry – and vital importance – of world-class family photography. The goal is for TiRF to be the one-stop location for families looking to find their perfect photographer, for anybody wanting to see the best images and Stories that family photography has to offer, and for photographers to learn and improve their craft.

Welcome to This is Reportage: Family.
